Salt Lake City Here We Come!

Packed up the trailer tonight and clipped the 3 bulls to get ready to go to the big city.  Tom & Braden will join Ruel & Tyler there for the week.  Be sure to stop by and see them and mention you read our blog to get your own pair of Barker Cattle Company  gloves to keep the chill off your hands.  Sounds like some cold weather is headed our way.   You know Kay will probably have some of her famous caramels to share as well at our stall.  Don't want to miss out on them.  :)

Be safe everyone and hope you enjoy the Utah Cattlemen's Convention!

Yearling Bulls

We climbed up on top of the Old Boxcar and took a quick picture of all the yearling bulls as they come up for feeding time.  They are growing well and it's quite a sight to see all of them lined up waiting for their favorite time of the day.  Some of our favorites right now are the O'Reilly Factor Angus calves and the Sm x An calves' weights are pretty impressive.

Success Story from Heifer sold in 2010 Sale

We wanted to share the following letter we received from a past customer/friend.  Love hearing success stories like this and also like to hear how our livestock progress after they leave our hands.  Thanks for sharing, Karly!

"Just wanted to stop by and say how thrilled I am with the heifer I got from you guys a few years back! I believe it was the 2010 sale and she just had her second calf and took first time (has taken first try for all three breedings, so nice!) for her third due next spring. I believe she is a Heat Wave daughter and was sale #62 if I remember right! My name is Karly Kavajecz, a friend of Kera Giampolo, in Northern California and I bought two steers and this heifer from you a few years back. Anyways just thought I'd send you some pics of her new baby who is heading to the same fair with an FFA kid and I can't wait to see how he does! She is Chianina x Maine and the bull was registered Angus. Here's a few pictures of him and his momma. "

Champion Cow/Calf!

Congratulations to Makayla Taylor for a job well done with her Cow/Calf pair.  Makayla purchased the cow, YM21 sired by Step Up as an open heifer from Barker Cattle Co. through the Legends of Fall Sale in Oct. 2011.  She won Reserve Champion Cow/Calf Pair at the Beef Unlimited Show 2013 in Filer, Idaho and won Grand Champion Cow/Calf Pair at the Cassia County Fair 2013 in Burley, Idaho.  Makayla works hard with her projects and we love to see youth rewarded for their efforts like this.  She plans to take the calf as a steer to next year's fair, and he looks like he'll be a good one!

Well done!

Tanner Maxfield: Grand Champion Uintah Basin Jr. Livestock Show, Utah.

Ben Urricelqui: Reserve Champion Shasta District Fair, California

Randa Allen: Reserve Champion Showman, Lincoln County Fair, Idaho.

A great story: This calf below was born under extreme circumstances.  He was discovered over 2 miles away from the corral hanging halfway out of his mother, head swollen, tongue out and we weren't sure if he was alive,. Tom was gone at the time, so Kassie and a neighbor were able to get the cow to the corral and get it pulled.  He survived, but we didn't think he could see, or at least we felt he could only see shadows.  We kept him at the corral for the first 4 months of his life, and he was named Koda by the kids after the Bear on the movie Brother Bear because he was hairy and thick as a bear cub. Everyone gave him attention and he loved it.  We moved him to a pasture finally with his mother, but the only way to get him there was for him to follow our 11 year old daughter, Kamri with him on the halter.  Every day we would take him up to the creep feeder, until finally he got it figured out.  He grew well!  But we knew we couldn't keep him for our kids, he had to have a special home.  Enter the Allen Family.  When it was explained to mom, Romy his situation, she felt he might be the perfect match for her son Racin's first year as she wanted a gentle calf for him.  Racin is deaf, and so what a great team these two made...a blind calf with a deaf child.

Racin & Koda in the Championship Drive..Well done, boys! Largest ribeye at 15.4, and ultrasound Carcass Champion, Lincoln County Fair, Idaho.   Club calf proved he yielded the Top Beef!

Family Traditions

Whether it be the Sunday afternoon baseball game with kids of all ages..

Playing games when it's too cold or late to be outside...

Waiting for the campfire to get rolling for the Hot Dog roast...

The traditions at Barker Cattle Company are
many and establishing relationships between family and friends is a common occurrence. There are greater things in life that need to be accomplished than work.  We are lucky to get to integrate tradition and family time into our work and feel blessed to do it in a place we call home...ELBA. Many have said they feel an inner peace when they come to Elba.  We see it as home, but know that when we leave, we can't wait to come back. We are lucky to enjoy the green grass, dirt roads, fish in the creeks, hay bales to jump on, and beautiful mountains with canyons.  This is GOD's COUNTRY!
Moving cows that need to be worked & posing for a picture at the end of the day.
